Marjorie Ann Ramey's expertise in differentiation and enrichment led to her appointment as a teacher of gifted and talented fourth graders at Carey Ridge Elementary School in Westfield. In this capacity she balances the academic needs of ten gifted students with those of her other pupils. Using computers to help students conduct research, prepare presentations and publish books, and adjusting her instruction based on pre- and post-test data, Ms. Ramey has helped all of her students score consistently well on state and regional assessments. As the building's academic coach, she organizes the Young Author Program, the science fair, math competitions and spelling bees. Looked to as a leader by her fourth-grade teaching team, Ms. Ramey is a member of numerous committees and a certified mentor to new and student teachers. At the end of the year, she recognizes students' individual talents with classroom awards—one for every student—including best logical thinker, best math person and best actor. If there were a best teacher award, Marjorie Ann Ramey would be highly deserving.
