Lynn Thompson is now retired. However, she previously taught her multiply handicapped junior high school-aged students in the Peoria Developmental Center. She also laid the groundwork in the district for them to attend classes in regular school settings. For seven years, she wove an array of outreach activities into the academic program tailored for her special students. They had pen pals in regular primary school they visited, and students from the regular middle school volunteered in her class and accompanied their new friends on recreational and cultural outings. Ms. Thompson also participated in the development of a community-based curriculum designed to enhance her students' ability to live independently.
