"We hope that our students will grow and develop with an aesthetic awareness," says Lynn Hansen, a music educator for grades seven through nine at Traverse City West Junior High School in Traverse City. Responding to the need for challenging musical pieces for junior high performers, Miss Hansen developed a highly successful Commissioning Project. The Project, now in its second year, seeks out composers interested in creating works that reflect the concerns, tastes and abilities of the students. Students rehearse for months in anticipation of the composer's term of residency and for the premiere performance that will gather the community around this unique event. To stay abreast of new techniques, music literature and relevant computer technologies, Miss Hansen is a frequent participant at professional conferences in her field.
