Sixth-grade social studies teacher Julie Reid makes history come alive for students at Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City through historical simulations, writing and group work. In addition to organizing an annual Egyptian banquet and Greek Olympiad, Mrs. Reid holds a Middle Ages Tournament and Festival in which students construct a castle, dress up in medieval outfits, and compete in modified tournament games such as jousting and archery. She introduces students to the world outside Carson City by having them collect and present postcards from friends and relatives around the world. The success of her approach is reflected in students' scores on the social studies portion of the Terra Nova test, which have exceeded the national average for the past several years. Mrs. Reid is a literacy coach for the district and a member of the school improvement committee.
