In his 17 years as principal of Archie R. Cole Junior High School in East Greenwich, Joseph Militello has made it a priority to strengthen the role played by parents and community in the school's decision-making process. Currently, five faculty/parent School Goal Committees are working in areas of academic, behavioral, and professional growth, school/community relations and school climate and appearance, he notes. In 1993, the U.S. Department of Education presented Mr. Militello with a National Excellence in Drug Prevention Education award for the program he developed at his school, where Mr. Militello has also implemented the Student as Mediators program. In addition, Mr. Militello has presided over his school's integrating technology into the curriculum. As a result, on-line services, E-mail, satellite broadcasts and the Internet are now an integral part of most classrooms.
