Biographical Information

Joseph Gaskin III is a chemistry teacher at Wade Hampton High School in Greenville, South Carolina. Upon retiring as a colonel after 26 years in the U.S. Air Force, Gaskin became a physics teacher at Richmond Senior High School in Rockingham. His Math, Model and Make program allowed students to explore the same physics problem in three different ways: as a mathematical problem, as a computer simulation and as an experiment using real objects and computer sensors. Gaskin currently teaches Advanced Placement Chemistry and focuses on enrolling low-achieving students in a two-year chemistry experience. He also served as chairman of the School Improvement Committee, which used surveys to gauge parental attitudes and to create effective and diverse ways to involve them in the school.
