Biographical Information

Six years ago, together with a group of exceptional teachers, Jerry Williams formed the school which he now heads, Elk Creek Elementary School in Pine. The school serves 350 families scattered throughout the mountainous terrain around Pine. Beyond providing a basic service to the population, the school plays an important role in providing a center around which a community has evolved. As principal of Elk Creek, Mr. Williams has helped institute several programs that expand the curriculum and instill a sense of self-esteem and belonging among students. A program that focuses on expanding students' geographic and multicultural awareness, features Magellan, a teddy bear, as its protagonist. Magellan has traveled the world as a guest of United Airlines. Students chart his trips and use his itinerary as a structure for their research. On February 2, 1995, Magellan is scheduled to travel on the space shuttle Discovery.
