Recognized as the 1990 California and National Teacher of the Year, Janis Gabay makes English come alive for her students at Junipero Serra High School in San Diego. Well organized and high spirited, Ms. Gabay has an enthusiasm for learning which encourages her students to discover their personal talents and abilities both inside and outside the classroom. As a mentor teacher, she challenges those around her to become their own teachers - to know and learn by themselves, "so that they too will someday make contributions of their own." In addition to her academic activities, Ms. Gabay serves as regional director of the California Literature Project.
