Janie Pressley Butts's fifth grade students at Flanders Elementary School in East Lyme discover early on the links between classroom studies and real life. Students read newspapers, magazines and paperbacks, and whenever possible, reading curriculum is integrated with social studies, science and mathematics. To build self-esteem, Ms. Butts promotes learning based on self-respect and consideration for others. Her "Ask the Retiree" program pairs students with elderly community residents, giving children first hand contact with history. Ms. Butts received the Connecticut Celebration of Excellence award in 1986; an Exemplary Teacher Citation in 1987; and the Woman of the Year Award from the National Council of Negro Women.
