When Jamie Lipscomb, music teacher at Evans Middle School in Newnan, won the Miss Georgia competition in 1989, she was advised to pursue a career in entertainment; she became an educator instead. Six years later, she continues to receive awards, including Georgia's 1997 Teacher of the Year Award. Striving to bring security, structure and a sense of belonging to her classroom, last year Ms. Lipscomb helped her students raise funds for a music technology lab containing keyboards and headphones. Her students have performed in a variety of venues, including Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and she herself has performed the national anthem at several Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks games.
