James DeProfio currently teaches in the Health and Bioscience Academy at Lowell High School in Lowell, a program designed for students interested in allied health as a college major and as a future career. Previously, Mr. DeProfio was a health education teacher at Lowell, where he took a multi-sensory approach to teaching his students. Through hands-on activities, Mr. DeProfio allowed his students to see, hear, taste, smell and feel what they were learning about. He emphasized vocabulary building and helped his students develop strong organizational skills. He initiated the Scholastic Academy tutoring program, through which pre-service education students from the University of Massachusetts teamed with members of the National Honor Society to provide extracurricular support in a variety of academic areas. Mr. DeProfio also taught a course entitled "Perspectives in Health" through the Virtual High School Project, an online network of high schools from the country.
