At the time that he received his Milken Educator Award, Mr. DeVona was a first-grade teacher at George C. Calef Elementary School in Johnston. He also worked with students from three area colleges as a cooperating teacher, which he began doing in 1975. In that capacity, he guided over 25 student teachers through field experience and provided instruction to over 100 other future teachers. Mr. DeVona has served as a member of the Educational Task Force for the Tomorrow Fund—a model program to educate administrators, teachers and students about the needs of children with acute physical needs who are seeking admission to area schools. As a faculty member of the National Geographic Society and the Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance, Mr. DeVona wrote numerous articles and conducted over 25 workshops on the subject of geography in an effort to revitalize the subject in Rhode Island.
