Literacy Leader Edna Miller has created several programs to help all students improve their reading skills at Roan Creek Elementary School in Mountain City. Mrs. Miller adapted a tutoring program for struggling first, second and third graders called "Ready, Set, Read!" which provides one-on-one balanced literacy instruction in reading, word study, writing, and re-reading. To inspire students to read, she becomes a character named "Rita Lott," visiting children in grades K-3 to share her love of reading through storytelling, singing and oral reading. Mrs. Miller also coordinates reading rallies where "Rita Lott" reads, sings and cheers to students about reading. Mrs. Miller invites students' grandparents into the classroom to promote literacy by reading to the children. She has conducted many training sessions and workshops on reading and leads weekly cluster meetings for teachers in grades K-3.
