"Academic achievement, enrichment and community involvement have provided me with a sense of purpose and a sense of accomplishment," says James Ann (Lynch) Sheley, principal of Lugoff Elementary School in Lugoff. Under Dr. (Lynch) Sheley's leadership, academic achievement at Lugoff Elementary School has catapulted the school into the 99th percentile in the state. The school has achieved deregulation status from the State Department of Education and has earned significant recognition in the School Incentive Award program. The numerous intervention and enrichment programs she implemented contribute to the school's rich educational environment. A science center, an art immersion program (Carousel of Learning) and a networked computer lab form part of the intensive after-school Pupil Enrichment Program. The school boasts a true educational partnership with parents, 90% of whom participate in programs ranging from tutoring to school beautification. In 1995, the U.S. Department of Education named Dr. (Lynch) Sheley South Carolina National Distinguished Principal.
