Before starting this year as the principal of Pendleton High School in Pendleton, Gary Burgess was the principal of D. R. Hill Middle School in Spartanburg. While at Hill, Dr. Burgess provided parents, community members and retired teachers with numerous opportunities for school involvement, including parent breakfasts, family-run book fairs, advisory board positions, and mentoring and shadowing programs. A strong believer in professional development, he has encouraged his staff to attend workshops and conferences. Under his leadership, D.R. Hill Middle School was recognized as a National "Blue Ribbon School" and South Carolina's "Palmetto's Finest." In addition to being an educator, Mr. Burgess is an ordained minister.
