After working with abused and neglected children at the Department of Welfare, Darlene Martin wanted her efforts to have more positive, palpable results, and she became a teacher. At Grafton High School in Grafton, where she currently teaches math, Mrs. Martin's efforts result in higher-order thinking and creativity among her students. For her "Plain Walls to Plane Walls" unit, she transforms her classroom into a living geometry model, painting each wall a different color to represent different planes and using retractable clotheslines to illustrate intersecting lines. In another of Mrs. Martin's innovative projects, students make concrete stepping stones in various shapes, which they then measure and place on the nature walk at the local elementary school.
