Magnet lead teacher Connie Green wrote the standards-based curriculum for the Environmental Science and Medical Studies strands at Mabelvale Magnet Middle School in Mabelvale. Through her partnerships with numerous science-learning programs such as Project WET, Project Wild and the Brandwein Institute, Ms. Green's students engage in discovery learning projects that positively impact the community. In one such project, her students studied the biological, chemical and physical properties of a nearby creek, drew conclusions from their data, and then developed plans to improve the area's environmental quality. Ms. Green coaches her students for national competition through SECME, an organization for science and math educators and their students. She plays an active role in the school's after-hours program for at-risk students and has helped the school earn several grants.
