Colin Brown is the principal at McKinley Elementary School, in Arlington, Virginia. Previously he was assistant principal at Tuckahoe Elementary School and Washington-Lee High School. Washington-Lee High School, also in Arlington, is a school with a student body comprised largely of minorities. Born in Jamaica, Mr. Brown considers one of his greatest triumphs the ability to take the lessons he learned from the culture differences he experienced as an immigrant and use them to assist students who now feel isolated in school. While at Washington-Lee, Mr. Brown participated in the creation of the Freshman Connection, an innovative high school transition program enabling ninth-grade English, mathematics, science and social studies students to share teachers, thus improving achievement and communication through continuity of instruction during the transition from middle to high school. Mr. Brown was the primary evaluator for English, social studies and business teachers for the school. He also served on the superintendent's Accountability and Evaluation Advisory Committee, the Professional Development Committee for teachers and on the African- American Student Achievement Committee.
