When Claudia Orr accepted her position as principal of Eisenhower Elementary in Green Bay, WI, she immediately set about turning negatives into positives. Immersing herself in learning and enlightening herself on its every nuance, she collaborated with colleagues to bring fresh energy and new vision to the once-ailing school. After she studied the school’s every in and out, Orr established a clear vision and common purpose. Her strong leadership has led to extraordinary gains. Reading scores increased from 2008–2009 by 4 percent in third grade, 29 percent in fourth grade and 13 percent in fifth. For the first time ever, her school made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), with 90 percent of third- and fourth-graders and 97 percent of fifth-graders performing at adequate levels across all subject areas.
A keen and consistent observer, Orr provides constructive feedback to all and inspires professional development and teamwork among staff. From modeling lessons and attending trainings to ensuring collaboration and accountability, Orr stays in tune with her school’s needs and accomplishments. A mentor to other principals, she guides the district on best practices for teaching bilingual students. Additionally, she has built viable alliances across the community, partnering with the local library and university. A lead math resource in the district, Orr has secured resource grants and technology such as SMART boards and computers for her school to keep students and faculty up to date on the latest learning tools. Eisenhower Elementary has become a high-achieving school, due in no small part to her leadership.
