Biographical Information

"As a health educator, I have been given the opportunity to help influence students' personal stance on health issues, especially diet, smoking and personal safety," says Cheryl Wells, who teaches chemistry, physical science, anatomy and physiology at Dexter High School in Dexter. For the past 20 years, Mrs. Wells has been the advisor of the Women in Science and Technology Club, whose members prepare and present science demonstrations to children in grades K-8, plan forums for Breast Cancer Awareness and Self-Defense, and help all students envision careers in science through all-day, all-science classes involving guest speakers who work in science and technology. She is particularly proud of the AIDS Awareness/HIV Prevention training for staff and students that she instituted at her school before such efforts were made mandatory by state law. As advisor to her school's National Honor Society, Mrs. Wells has helped develop a number of community service opportunities for her students, including Red Cross blood drives and Special Olympic events.
