Teacher Charlotte P. Begay's instructional approach involves not only the students at Wingate Elementary School in Fort Wingate, but the parents and community as well. As the school's Family and Child Education (FACE) coordinator, Miss Begay works with teachers, teaching assistants and parent educators to plan lessons for each week. She frequently integrates the local Navajo culture into her lessons and varies her instruction to target multiple intelligences. As a former member of a reading research committee, Miss Begay helped conduct in-depth action research on Wingate's reading program, the findings of which she co-presented before the International Council of Teachers of English. She has made several presentations on the importance of parenting in early childhood education at the local and national levels and conducts parenting workshops throughout the eastern section of the Navajo reservation.
