Biographical Information

Carolyn Shuman is a resource coordinator, librarian and reading teacher at Petersburg and Dorcas Elementary Schools in Grant County. Self-paced learning units and learning games for assessment are some of the strategies Mrs. Shuman incorporates into her literacy programs. ARTS (Athletes Reading To Students), a program she adapted for the schools she serves, provides high school student athletes as readers and role models for elementary school students. In 1990, Mrs. Shuman, who is extensively involved in professional development and community-based organizations to support literacy, played an important role in resolving an educational funding crisis that threatened to close all libraries in her county. Due to her resourceful advocacy efforts, all existing school libraries were saved. Additionally, funds were raised to create libraries for those schools that did not previously have them. An educator for 29 years, Mrs. Shuman was named 1995-96 West Virginia Reading Teacher of the Year by the West Virginia Reading Association.
