Biographical Information

After 31 years with the Hillsboro School District in Hillsboro, Oregon, Carlos retired from the district in 2009. Overall, Carlos has been an educator for over 35 years. For the last ten years in Hillsboro Carlos was the Deputy Superintendent of Support Services. In that role Carlos was responsible for several departments including nutrition services, technology, facilities and construction management, transportation services, Hispanic outreach, school safety, discipline and equity. It was through the equity work Carlos felt most rewarded moving the district to the formation of an equity committee, training on institutional racism and cultural competence, diversifying the licensed work force (both teacher and administrative) and the formulation of a district plan to address the issues of racism and educational equity. Carlos is also a founding member of the Oregon Association of Latino Administrators, a statewide organization committed to mentoring Latino/a educators into the field of educational administration. Carlos is also a founding member of the Human Rights Council of Washington County in Oregon. Carlos is currently consulting on issues of racism, equity and school climate in schools.
