Barrie Becker is an independent studies teacher in Pacoima, California. She is literally a one-woman school teaching all subjects from grade 8 through grade 12 to at-risk students. The majority of her students are homeless and come from a very unstable family background. All are from Latino families and have missed much of their elementary and middle school education. Valley IS offers them a safe and caring learning environment to catch up at their own pace and graduate with much glory at the Walt Disney Hall. It also offers opportunities in culinary arts, business education, and robotics.
