Seventeen years ago Anthony Harduar, principal of Willard L. Bowman Elementary School in Anchorage, resigned from a position in banking to pursue a career in education." I found that the satisfaction I received from teaching young children was something I had never before experienced in the business world," says Mr. Harduar. Three years ago, Mr. Harduar had the most rewarding experience of his teaching career when he was selected to open a new elementary school. Together with the exceptional staff he selected, Mr. Harduar has helped establish "one of the strongest elementary school programs in the Anchorage School District." The "Adopt-A-Student" program, designed to pair staff members with students, and the "multi-age classrooms" are some of the innovative strategies that have been put into practice at his initiative. Mr. Harduar has served with various organizations involved in school planning and curriculum review.
