Sharon earned her doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1991, a Career Ladder III endorsement from the State of TN in 1986, and the English Language Arts National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Ceertification in 1999. Her teaching career spanned more than 43 years in Middle TN: teaching English and French at Springfield High, 1971-1976; teaching English/Latin/French at Goodlettsville High, 1983-1986; teaching English and writing + coordinating the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme at Hunters Lane High, 1986-2004; serving as Assistant Principal at Hume-Fogg Academic Magnet, 2004-2006; coordinating and directing Advanced Academics programs for Metro Nashville Public Schools, 2006-2014.
After retiring in 2014 from the Metro Nashville Public Schools as Director of Advanced Academics, Dr. Chaney trained job-embedded teacher candidates at Union University's graduate campus in Hendersonville, TN, 2014-2021. A major focus of her classes, seminars, and field experiences that she planned for the graduate students each semester helped candidates prepare for an edTPA portfolio submission to Pearson, a new requirement for all teacher candidates in the State. She also chaired and continues to serve on dissertation committees for doctoral students at Union University Hendersonville (UUH).
