Joan McShane (IA ’94) passed away on November 5, 2020 at age 83. She was an elementary mathematics and science teacher for 34 years at Jefferson Elementary School in Davenport. In 1993 Joan was Iowa's Ambassador for Education, a distinction that gave her the opportunity to travel throughout the state presenting workshops on curriculum development and educational and administrative reform. President George H.W. Bush presented Joan with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching in 1991. She was also a field editor for Science and Children, a journal for preschool through middle school educators.
