Dear Milken Educators and Champions of Education,
When Michael Sana (HI '15), a science teacher at Waipahu High School, was a teenager, he and his mother made a deal: She would fight her terminal cancer long enough to attend his high school graduation, and he would finish college and find a way to do good in the world. Both kept their promises. With Sana's help, his biology students have published research with the National Institutes of Health, worked at prestigious centers like the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and earned scholarships at top universities in Hawaii and on the mainland. "Thank you for seeing my potential in science, believing in me, and pushing me far beyond [what] I could ever imagine," one student emailed to congratulate Sana the day of his surprise Award notification. "Just know that you've made a huge impact in my life."

Why Great Teachers Matter: The Students of Dr. Jeff Gall
In our new series "Why Great Teachers Matter," we're asking former students of Milken Educators how these teachers influenced their careers and lives. Our first installment features three former students of Dr. Jeff Gall (MO '96) who say Gall had a profound and lasting impact on them, both professionally and personally. One example: Cardiologist Gautam Nayak calls Gall "the single most influential teacher" in the physician's 25 years of academic study. These moving tributes are a must-read.
