Fourth-grade teacher Susan S. Ralstin has high expectations for a diverse group of students at Kanoheda Elementary School in Lawrenceville. She is standards-based in her instruction and uses achievement data to make instructional plans suited to the needs of each child. On Career Day, Petty Officer Second Class Susan Ralstin is in demand for her stories about being a SOSUS (Sound Surveillance System) Array Supervisor in the U.S. Navy prior to becoming a teacher. She created a mathematics lesson called "Battleship" in which students call out grid locations to find spice cargo ships and even slave ships. Mrs. Ralstin has been highlighted on the Gwinnett County Public Television Station as a teacher who is successful in using technology with her students.
