Bobbi Ameen took an interdisciplinary approach to art instruction at the National Mine School middle school in Ishpeming. Her "Red Dust" oral history program integrated art, English and history, resulting in an award-winning student publication and several multi-image slide shows. In other programs, she enlisted industrial arts students to create a block design lesson; she collaborated with the home economics and language arts teachers to develop puppet shows for sixth-graders; and her photography students made slides to illustrate poetry lessons in English classes. Such creativity earned Ms. Ameen a national commendation from the American Association for State and Local History, and she was named a Michigan Art Education Association Teacher of the Year.
