Maggie Scheffer's first-graders at Bates Elementary School in Iron River learn "to love what they do and make it their play." Since 1994, over 300 children have read their own works on "KIDTALES," a weekly storytelling program created by Ms. Scheffer and broadcast over a local radio station. The program has generated considerable local support and as a result, the school earned a state grant to purchase state-of-the-art recording equipment. As director of the Summer Reading Program, she provides older students with hands-on activities, resources and incentives to read. Ms. Scheffer is also a member of the County Reading Council, which plans the annual Young Authors' Conference for K-6 students from Iron County's two school districts.
