At Spiro High School in Spiro, English teacher Kasandra Lovell uses everything from colored chalk and eye-catching bulletin boards to music and mind-mapping activities to get her students excited about learning. An advocate of parental involvement, Mrs. Lovell developed a student-run class newsletter to keep parents informed and sends them "scorecards" reflecting their children's positive work. As head of the English Department and chair of staff development, she believes strongly in collaborating with colleagues. Mrs. Lovell employs the Great Expectations teaching model, utilizing an integrated, holistic curriculum to teach all kinds of learners, has been an instructor for the Great Expectations Summer Institute for four years, and has given local and state-level presentations for the program. She obtained National Board Certification in Early Adolescence/English Language Arts in November 2000.
