Harriet Woodard teaches math at Stone Mountain Junior High School. Since 1978, she has provided a free tutorial service to help students with math deficiencies. She works with students, both her own and those from other classes, before and after the regular school day. In the classroom, Ms. Woodard has found that cooperative learning is very effective. After she teaches a concept and 80 percent of the class has mastered it, she allows students to work in small groups, where those who understand reinforce their knowledge by helping to teach those who are having difficulty. Ms. Woodard was named Teacher of the Year at Stone Mountain in 1987.
