Through her association with community and educational organizations, Zona Jefferson, principal of Alice Drive Elementary School in Sumter, works to "garner community support for education and to provide information about education to the community." Years of involvement with the State Department of Education have allowed Dr. Jefferson to play an important role in the formation and mentoring of new principals. Under Dr. Jefferson's leadership, Alice Drive Elementary School has distinguished itself as a six-time recipient of the South Carolina School Incentive Reward, an award that recognizes improved student performance on achievement tests, as well as student and teacher attendance. The highly successful Writing Wizards program that she developed is partly staffed by parent volunteers and offers students stimulating daily writing activities. Dr. Jefferson has also overseen the early intervention program for students with special needs and the resulting creation of a preschool developmentally disabled program.
