Biographical Information

Dr. Ken Roy is currently on staff as Director of Environmental Health & Chemical Safety for Glastonbury Public Schools (GPS), Glastonbury, CT. He served as K-12 Director of Science & Safety for GPS, with administrative, supervisory and instructional responsibilities in all areas of elementary and secondary science education. He has over forty-five years of extensive experience in science education at the K-16 levels. He also is the Chief Science Safety Compliance Adviser/Author/Columnist for the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the Safety Compliance Officer for the National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA), a member of the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE) Science Education Safety Committee and associate member of the Council of State Science Supervisors. Dr. Roy is manager and senior consultant for National Safety Consultants, LLC. In this role, he is a science education and safety compliance consultant for several national and international publishers, science laboratory equipment suppliers, insurance companies, state departments of education, private and public school districts, professional associations and other general industry entities. During his career, Dr. Roy served as president of the National Science Education Leadership Association (NSELA), Executive Director of the NSELA, member of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Board of Directors, and Director of the NSELA National Science Leadership Institute. He also served as North American Representative for the International Council of Associations for Science Education (ICASE). He was the ICASE Project Safety Officer (2000-2009). Dr. Roy was a consultant to the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Project 2061, the NSTA’s Program on Scope, Sequence, and Coordination for Secondary School Science, the National Science Standards and, the Connecticut State Science Frameworks. He has had over three hundred publications on education and safety in professional journals, in addition to seminars, workshops and other presentations in state, regional, national and international forums. He is author of nine science education and safety compliance related books. He also worked as an ICASE consultant at the United Nations UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France and ICASE liaison at Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia. He earned his BS & MS from Central Connecticut State University. He completed his Sixth Year & Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Roy has been trained as an authorized OSHA instructor at Keene State College OSHA Education Center in Manchester, New Hampshire. He has received numerous state and national awards/recognitions including the prestigious Milken Foundation Education Award, the National Science Education Leader Award, and the Connecticut Celebration of Excellence Award. Dr. Roy also currently serves as Chief Safety Compliance Advisor for the NSTA and Safety Compliance Officer for NSELA.
