Biographical Information

Gary Bacon, Ph.D., is a teacher and program director for Los Altos High School in Los Altos. A teacher for 30 years, Dr. Bacon founded and continues to direct Los Altos High School's alternative program, "The Learning Community," through which, he combines an integrated curriculum with "hands-on" activities and projects that send students outside the classroom and into the real world. "My love and appreciation for life brought me into education. I knew what touched me, and I felt strongly that I could touch others and inspire them to live more fully. My choice to become an educator was strongly influenced by two things. One was the few stand-out teachers that I experienced in my life; the other was my sense of inner knowing that I could be the kind of teacher that I longed to have all those many years in primary and secondary school." Dr. Bacon was a 1992 California Teacher of the Year finalist.
