Donald Berthiaume, biology teacher at Biddeford High School in Kennebunkport, has created a program that benefits not only students, but the environment as well: The Saco River Water Monitoring Program involves students in a five-year study of the nearby Saco River. Initiated three years ago as part of a class for non-college-bound and at-risk students, the program is now an after-school activity open to all Biddeford students and includes volunteers from the community, and cooperation from the Wells National Estuarine Reserve and the Maine Shore Stewardship. Mr. Berthiaume also developed the first high school biotechnology course in Maine and was the first teacher in his area to use telecommunications technology for long-distance learning.
