April Shigemoto is a core teacher and curriculum coordinator for the seventh through twelfth grade students of Kauai High and Intermediate School in Lihue. "Teachers are the most vital element in the total educational system," says Ms. Shigemoto. "The challenges, impressions and inspiration for learning are all provided by the teacher. Teaching teaches humility, it fosters self-respect and nurtures compassion. My purpose is to enhance the place of learning for the student and to create positive, lasting impressions for our young people." Ms. Shigemoto was recognized as Kauai District Teacher of the Year for 1989-199 and as State Scottish Rite Teacher of the Year in 1990-1991.
