Biographical Information

Suzanne Scotten teaches English and Spanish at EV Cain Middle School in Auburn,CA. Previously, she taught language arts in Weimar, CA, and was the yearbook and journalism advisor at Albert Einstein Middle School in Sacramento, where she helped to significantly boost the academic achievement of her eighth graders. Scotten's innovations included a collection of poems from more than 200 students, which were book-bound and sold on campus. Scotten led field trips to the Ashland Shakespeare Festival in Oregon, after providing special afterschool workshops on Shakespeare's works. Scotten also created a 15-hour "survival workshop" for new teachers and co-authored a guide book for teachers to help them succinctly assess student progress. As the result of a successful presentation at a Middle School confernece, Scotten co-wrote "Assess in One Page or Less" to help teachers avoid the paperwork load. In 2009 she was one of the finalists for selection on the National Assessment Governing Board. In June, 2011, she was invited to attend the Microsoft Partners in Learning Innovative Education Forum to highlight her documentary film-making project and compete with 80 others for a slot in the international competition.
