The West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) has appointed Dr. Steven Paine (WV '95) as the state's superintendent of schools.

This is the second time Paine is serving as state superintendent; his previous stint stretched from 2005 to 2011.

"Dr. Paine's past experiences and knowledge of West Virginia’s educational landscape make him the ideal candidate to serve as Superintendent of Schools," WVBE President Tom Campbell said in a news release. "He is a proven leader who is committed to raising the bar for everyone involved in education, and the State Board is confident in his ability to lead during this challenging time."

Until this appointment, Paine had been serving as interim superintendent of Wayne County Schools. He won the Milken Educator Award in 1995 as the principal of Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School
in Buckhannon, the county seat of Upshur County.
