Dr. Michael Johnson, the superintendent of Alaska's Copper River School District and the state's 2008 Milken Educator, has been named Alaska's commissioner of education and early development. Johnson will begin in his new role on July 1, 2016.

"I'm very excited. It's a huge honor," Johnson told Alaska Dispatch News. "I can't think of a better state to be called to be the commissioner for than the state of Alaska."

Johnson was the principal of Glennallen Elementary School in Glennallen, which is also in the Copper River district, when he received his Milken Award. He also served as the district's curriculum and professional development director.
