Biographical Information

Stacie I. Smith, served as a fourth and fifth grade science and social studies teacher at Davison Elementary-Middle School, in Detroit for 15 years. During that time she engaged students in active learning through hands-on activities and experiences. As chair of the science and social studies departments, Ms. Smith collaborated with colleagues to assess and improve instructional methods. She initiated, planned, and coordinated Davison's Family Math and Science program, involving families in hands-on learning activities. Each year, Ms. Smith took students on field trips to Selfridge Air Force Base where they experienced the excitement of outer space while building and launching model rockets and participating in flight simulations. She piloted the Greening of Detroit program, in which students learned to classify and build habitats while working with community members to construct an outdoor habitat. Ms. Smith served all schools in Detroit as a Science Instructional Specialist, a role she enjoyed for 6 years. During this time she worked to increase a love for science education by writing exciting curriculums, developing student programs, hosting relevant workshop, and engaging the community-at large. Currently, she serves as an Assistant Principal while completing a Doctoral Program in Teacher Leadership.
