Biographical Information

After 28 years of teaching experience primarily at the elementary level, Juli Goerend learned the test development industry working as an educational test developer at Data Recognition Corporation in Maple Grove, Minnesota. She participates in all aspects of test and item development and works with freelance item writers and consultants in passage selection and item development. Mrs. Goerend compiles, reviews, and edits test items and facilitates various test development activities and participates in professional development, planning, and presentations to state departments of education. At the time of her Milken Educator Award, Mrs. Goerend was a computer curriculum coordinator and fourth-grade teacher at Fayette Elementary School in Fayette, Iowa, where she helped shape Iowa's science, math and technology curricula and standards. As a charter member of her district's original technology committee, Mrs. Goerend was also one of five members of the Governor's Conference on Math and Science Education Reform Grant team, which identified ways of integrating technology into math and science programs. A pioneer of distance learning, Mrs. Goerend developed "M&M-Count and Crunch," a collaborative, activity-based unit that was broadcast to two other classes 300 miles away using the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) - the first time the ICN had been used in that manner by elementary students. In 2008, Mrs. Goerend joined the licensure and certification team at Pearson VUE. In her capacity as a content developer for national board exams, she works with sponsoring associations to development exams.
