Social studies teacher and department chair Joe Kieke motivates his students at Connally High School in Austin to delve into the social and political implications of historical and current events by engaging them in wide-ranging discussions and holding them to high academic standards. An instructor in the school's Distinguished Achievement Program for gifted students, Mr. Kieke started the school's National Honor Society and sponsors its award-winning "Future Problem Solvers" group. He was a leader in developing the district's secondary social studies curriculum and has served on committees for school-wide diversity and school-based decision making. An advocate of the effective integration of learning technology, Mr. Kieke left the classroom for one year to become the school's technology coordinator.
