With a motto of "Aim for the top because the bottom is too crowded," Dr. Marian L.J. White-Hood, principal of Kettering Middle School in Upper Marlboro, has led her school to national recognition as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In only four years as Kettering's principal, she has achieved this through a variety of programs and practices, including a system that allows parents to grade the school; a "Student Principal of the Day" program; mentoring, character development and social skills programs; and an extensive program of technology that includes four computer labs and an on-campus television station. In 1997, Dr. White-Hood was named Maryland Secondary School Principal of the Year.
