An Emotional Surprise for Alaska Teacher Megan Eilers
FAIRBANKS— "I tell students, you never know what's going to be the one thing that’s going to inspire you." It's this idea that guides registered nurse and educator Megan Eilers' health occupations classes at Hutchison High School. "Exposing these students to all different kinds of things and watching them grow into the future health professionals that they're going to be, that is what has kept me here," Megan says.
On January 30, she was named the sole 2023-24 Milken Award recipient in Alaska at a surprise assembly. Fairbanks North Star Borough School District Superintendent Dr. Luke Meinert joined Dr. Joshua Barnett, chief executive officer for the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET), visiting on behalf of the Milken Family Foundation, to celebrate the outstanding teacher in front of her incredibly proud students and colleagues.
Megan's emotional message to her students after the assembly: "It has been a tremendous pleasure and honor to love and inspire you guys." Take a look back at Megan's big day.
