English teacher Christopher W. Mazzino works with colleagues at West Scranton High School in Scranton to integrate writing across the curriculum. Students in his creative writing class wrote a book entitled 26 Odd Creative Works by Creative Writers that was published and sold through well-known book retailers such as Amazon.Com and Barnes & Noble. As chair of the writing committee that helps prepare faculty and students for the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) tests in Writing and Reading, Mazzino focused intense attention on improving assessments, yielding a significant increase in student performance on the tests. In 2003 alone, the writing test scores rose from 52 percent to 85 percent. Mazzino attends the National Council of Teachers of English each year, and presents in-service workshops at several local school districts. In 2004, he was recognized by Columbia University's National Endowment for the Humanities, which offered him a seat, enabling him to pursue his interest in Renaissance studies. In 2006, he was selected by the Fulbright Commission in Washington D.C. for the International Exchange Program.
