Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz Announces Kelly Wilber of Southport Elementary as Milken Educator Award Winner

INDIANAPOLIS – This morning, Glenda Ritz, Indiana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction announced that Kelly Wilber of Southport Elementary in MSD Perry Township has been honored as a recipient of the Milken Educator Award. The award is given by the Milken Family Foundation and along with national recognition, includes a $25,000 cash prize.

“It is my distinct honor to announce that Kelly Wilber has earned this prestigious award,” said Ritz. “She is an excellent educator for her students and a great example for her fellow educators of how to strengthen our classrooms. She tailors her instruction to meet the needs of each of her students and also makes time to provide assistance to other teachers. She is an excellent educator and well-deserving of this honor.”

The Milken Educator Awards, conceived by the Milken Family Foundation to attract, retain and motivate outstanding talent to the teaching profession, is the nation’s preeminent teacher recognition program, dubbed the “Oscars of Teaching” by Teacher magazine. Since 1987, the Milken Family Foundation has devoted more than $137 million in funding to the Milken Educator Awards, including over $65 million in individual Awards to more than 2,600 recipients plus powerful professional development opportunities and networking with leading education stakeholders.

Wilber is a 5th grade teacher at Southport Elementary in MSD Perry Township. In addition, Wilber is a mentor to other teachers and regularly works with them in all aspects of their work. At the district level, Wilber serves on the High Ability team, volunteers for the district Title I Science Night, organizes community fundraisers, and has been instrumental in helping to plan the district’s summer school program, investing her own time in the effort.
