Recognized as a National Distinguished Principal by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School Principals, Ralph Murakami is principal at Lihikai School in Kahului. He has managed over the years to add a very personal touch to education. Not only an always visible administrator accessible to teachers and staff, Mr. Murakami sees to it that all students feel welcome at Lihikai. When district lines were redrawn to bring disadvantaged families into Lihikai, he personally visited new families and welcomed each one. He inspires learning through such programs as the "Success in Reading and Writing" program for which he not only attended initial training sessions with teachers but also conducted demonstration lessons as well.
