Biographical Information

Pat (Hartland) Holman is a teacher at Mendenhall River Community School in Juneau. A 1991 recipient of the Presidential Award for Elementary Math for the State of Alaska, she divides her time as a fourth-grade teacher and an elementary math teacher trainer for both the City and Borough of the Juneau School District. As a member of the Alaska Math Consortium, Ms. (Hartland) Holman has presented numerous classes and workshops to other Alaska teachers on various aspects of mathematics including math manipulations and problem solving. She is also a presenter of the Gender Equity in Math and Science Program. Both programs aim to involve all students in math and science and to prepare them for careers in these fields. Ms. (Hartland) Holman has continued her education through numerous university courses and workshops. The content of the courses often overlaps adding depth and richness to my teaching, she says. "Memory theory, questioning strategies, behavioral objectives, and peer coaching have all heightened my desire to become a better teacher."
